Clinical Laboratory Science (B.S.)

Use Laboratory Skills to Support Patient Care

Clinical laboratory scientists provide invaluable support to physicians and other healthcare professionals by analyzing medical samples and accurately reporting their findings. At Seton Hill University, you will gain the knowledge and experience necessary to become a certified clinical or medical laboratory scientist.

Why Study Clinical Laboratory Science at Seton Hill University?

In Seton Hill University’s 3+1 Program, you will earn a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from Seton Hill after your clinical year at one of our affiliated hospital schools. After completing your clinical year of study, you will be eligible to take any of several national examinations to become certified as a professional medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist. You will spend your first 3 years at Seton Hill University:

  • mastering scientific disciplines that support the practice of clinical laboratory science, including organismal, cell and microbiology; medical genetics; biochemistry; organic chemistry and human anatomy.
  • enjoying studying in the liberal arts - to ensure that you have a broad knowledge base to support you in the years to come.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

As a Seton Hill University student, you will have access to cutting edge technology, labs and classrooms in The Joanne Woodyard Boyle Health Sciences Center, which is home to our Natural and Health Sciences Programs, including Seton Hill University’s Clinical Laboratory Science Program. One example: Seton Hill's Clinical Science Program will give you the opportunity to use a state-of-the-art genetic analyzer for both research projects and in the classroom.

Clinicals

Your final year will involve intensive clinical education at an affiliated hospital school accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Affiliated hospital schools currently include:

  • UPMC Altoona
  • Memorial Medical Center
  • Conemaugh Health System
  • Saint Vincent Health System

Seton Hill students benefit from the “loss” of a fourth year on-campus, as you spend your final year of schooling getting real-world experience in the medical field, while still graduating in four years with your class.

Careers

Jobs in this area include performing tasks such as:

  • Preparing cultures for tissue samples
  • Analyzing lab reports for accuracy
  • Collecting and studying blood samples to determine morphology
  • Microscopically examining slides of body fluids
  • Cross-matching blood for transfusions

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the job outlook for medical and clinical lab technologists in the U.S. to grow faster than the average. Seton Hill’s award-winning Career and Professional Development Center will work with you, your professors and local, regional and national employers to provide you with the career preparation skills, internship opportunities and placement services you need to get where you’re going.
