Reading Specialist - Education (Certificate)
Prepare to Become a Reading Specialist
At Seton Hill, you have two options for preparing to earn teaching certification as a reading specialist:
- You can prepare for certification while earning your M.Ed. in Critical and Cultural Literacy, or
- You can add teaching certification preparation courses to a bachelor's degree you've already earned at Seton Hill (or elsewhere) as a postbaccalaureate student.
Initial teaching certification is required for either option.
The Reading Specialist Certificate Preparation Program is composed of 8 online courses, including a practicum with in-person components. Courses take a critical, research-based, culturally-responsive approach to literacy. Instruction is rooted in progressive theories of language and social development, such as the Science of Reading, and is aligned to both the Pa. Department of Education Guidelines for Reading Specialists and the International Literacy Association Standards for Reading Professionals.
Seton Hill is approved by the Pa. Dept. of Education to provide education certification preparation. If you plan to teach in another state, you can do that, too; Pennsylvania has signed an Interstate Certification Agreement. The Reading Specialist -Education Program at Seton Hill will prepare you to obtain certification in grades Pre K - 12.
